In this episode of Sherapy with Sheri & Randy, we talk about the places retirees and older adults don’t always feel comfortable going anymore — and why. From crowded shopping centers and loud restaurants to self-checkout lanes, Disneyland and technology-heavy stores, aging can quietly change how we experience the world around us.

This honest and relatable conversation explores retirement life, getting older, overstimulation, changing confidence, social anxiety, and choosing peace over chaos after 50 and 60. If you’ve ever thought, “This place just feels different now,” you’re not alone.

With humor, heart, and real talk, Sheri & Randy share personal experiences about aging, retirement, mental wellness, and adapting to a fast-changing world.

SPEAKER_00

You know, Randy went to the grocery store yesterday. He went to Winco, which is a place near here, and he absolutely had a freaking fit. Didn't you, Randy?

SPEAKER_01

I did.

SPEAKER_00

He in fact he was so upset that there was a lady in a car behind him telling him to calm down. What was she saying to you?

SPEAKER_01

Relax. Take it easy. It's okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. That's how upset Randy was about the grocery grocery store. We're gonna talk about that. We're gonna talk about things that we avoid uh a lot now that we're older because of incidents like that. Last day a while. Retired life still makes a smile. Shelley Randy cruising along. Welcome to Cherokee where you belong. So the things that we avoid now as we've gotten older, just because a lot of it's crowd, but it's a lot of just uh it'll be a lot of our our customer service.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, it's just a lot of things.

SPEAKER_00

So the reason I think we avoid one of them grocery stores. I think one of the reasons we avoid the grocery stores is because there's a lot of people. Yeah, it's crowded. And when you are limited in mobility, it's it's a pain in the ass.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I think the worst part is getting out of line, checkout.

SPEAKER_00

Checkout is probably harder for you than for me. I'm fine with uh self-checkout. Because I still think I work for Target, so that's probably why just doing my job.

SPEAKER_01

I'll do self-checkout if I don't have as many items. If I have more items, I go to the to the walks.

SPEAKER_00

And why is that?

SPEAKER_01

Well, some places they won't take card at the self-checkout. Self-self-checkout, some places.

SPEAKER_00

But I think it's best, you know, for me, like the other day I went to Walmart, and Walmart I went early because we all know what Walmart's like. So I went early. There was hardly any people there. I went and got my little butterfly hummingbird um wind chime, but there was no people nobody there. I did a little grocery shopping, bought a little stuff. I was out of there in 15 minutes. Walked right up, checked out, didn't have to wait in line, and left. Not a bunch of people, not a bunch of hassles. It was super easy. And that's usually when I go now. When I get up early, because you don't want to avoid the it's just a pain in the ass.

SPEAKER_01

I will get up early and doing it's a lot easier or going late.

SPEAKER_00

And if there's not going to be any parking, forget it, we're not gonna go. Sometimes we'll circle that damn parking lot looking for the good parking spot in front of the door.

SPEAKER_01

Amazes me. They have uh not enough parking spots, but they have plenty of uh pickup areas to pick up your food. Over um too many.

SPEAKER_00

And I've seen many people while I'm sitting waiting to have my groceries brought out, sitting in those those marked spaces, and I see other people just pull in and jump out, go in the store and come out.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because they they're they're being illegal. That pisses me off. Because I follow the rules, damn it.

SPEAKER_01

And I want to know what it is about somebody with a motorcycle that parks in a handicap. That should not be allowed. I mean he's got handicapped things on his motorcycle. So how the heck did he get that?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. Maybe he has a heart issue, maybe he has he he has uh seizures. I I don't know. He shouldn't be driving. But a motorcycle, you can park that anywhere. Anywhere, really. Yeah, but if but if you're talking about the guy that we're talking about, a target, he's got a nice motorcycle. He's a very nice motorcycle. He doesn't want people bound bouncing into it with their, you know.

SPEAKER_01

So that's what you tell your doctor I got a very nice motorcycle and what you bouncing into.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know what he tells his doctor.

SPEAKER_01

It's like, my God, I must be it must be a hardest problem or something, because I don't know how he got a handicapped thing on his mouth, on his plate on his bike.

SPEAKER_00

I I'm guessing he's an employee.

SPEAKER_01

Oh it's weird.

SPEAKER_00

So listen, we're good. So number two, number two, number two, we have a tendency to ramble on and we're gonna try to stop doing that.

SPEAKER_01

Sorry about that.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. So number two, I think, for for me is, and it's not really that I'm uncomfortable or it's that it's it's it has to do with crowds, driving at night. My eyes are not as good anymore, and especially if I'm in a place that I'm not conf uh comfortable with or I'm familiar with, it's hard for me to drive. And the lights nowadays, the the bright lights, it's like you're being interrogated. You know, they have these lights in your face, you can't freaking see, and I don't even know how that's illegal. I mean, I remember back in the day when you were driving someplace that was dark, you turned your brights on. You saw a car coming, you turn your brights off to be nice because you didn't want to blind them. But somebody decided, you know what? Let's make it where you don't have to turn your brights on and off and just leave the brights on all the time. And they went, you know, Tom, that's a good idea. Let's put that in all the cars. No, Tom, that was not a good idea. I hate it.

SPEAKER_01

Especially trucks.

SPEAKER_00

The trucks are the worst. The trucks are the I mean, even if they're behind you, it's blind you, but at least I could I could fix my you know rear view mirror and I'm off okay.

SPEAKER_01

I drive to work in the dark. Huh? I drive to work in the dark every morning. It's always dark. It doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_00

But you're familiar with your area. I'm not familiar around here, so it would bother me. I'd be a little more confused. Never had that problem when I was younger, but now that I'm older.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I think the brights bother me a little bit more too. You know, like I get a truck behind me is really bright. I took my my mirror and I pushed that thing or it darkens it, so that's what it's for, Randy. Yeah. We know that.

SPEAKER_00

So listen, if you're new here, subscribe. Please. If you're enjoying what we're doing, subscribe. Because we're gonna do a lot more stuff. SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_00

It's a fun channel. Go to you'll love our shorts. You'll love Danny, Randy, Randy, Danny, Randy, Danny, Danny.

SPEAKER_01

Randy, Daddy, Randy, Dan.

SPEAKER_00

Dancing. Dancing. He's he's really good at it. Okay, so something else that's really that you talked about earlier, which I thought, oh yeah, sporting events.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00

Sporting events is not easy to go to anymore. Not at all. Mm-mm. It's yeah. I can't I would love to go to a Dodger game. Or even an Angel game, even though I'm not an Angel fan fan, but the Dodgers are playing, I would go. And Angel Stadium is nice.

SPEAKER_01

It's a lot easier at an Angel Stadium for handicaps than it is Dodger Stadium.

SPEAKER_00

Well, you haven't been there since they remodeled it. It's really nice.

SPEAKER_01

That's probably true.

SPEAKER_00

Because I parked in a handicapped spot and they let you ride in if you had a handicap tag. They just say, come on in, come on. You don't even have to wait, just come on in. They'll put you in a place and you don't really have to walk that far.

SPEAKER_01

No, you get in the stadium and they have the special area for you and you just go, you're right there.

SPEAKER_00

But it's really nice.

SPEAKER_01

It's just but too many people.

SPEAKER_00

It's the same reason, traffic. Traffic is a pain in the ass. Even though I love to drive, if you live out in California and it's you can't avoid it pretty much anyway.

SPEAKER_01

LA Orange County is a nightmare.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's and if you drive it, you know.

SPEAKER_01

One of the worst places to go though is a DMV.

SPEAKER_00

DMV, yeah. You have to make an appointment. Yeah. You can't just willy-nilly walk into the DMV because you'll be waiting for the code.

SPEAKER_01

You really, really stay there for a long time.

SPEAKER_00

You have to actually make an appointment. And then hopefully you don't have to wait too long, but you still gotta wait.

SPEAKER_01

You all you guys any anybody over 50, 60 years old understand how what it pain.

SPEAKER_00

I go to the kiosk. They have kiosk now. Uh like if you want to renew your tags or triple A or whatever. Yeah. You can do that instead of going to the DMV. I remember you used to have to always go to you don't have to do that now. Even your license, you can do that online. It's the paperwork stuff that you have to do at the DMV. And yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I go to AAA. Triple A is a lot easier.

SPEAKER_00

Triple A is easier. They're pretty quick there, actually. And restaurants too. Restaurants is another one because when I go to a restaurant, I just want to sit, relax, and talk. And nowadays they're so crowded. And uh if you want to sit and have a conversation, you can't because it's just so loud, people just talking so loud.

SPEAKER_01

Worst places you go there and you're waiting, and there's all kinds of tables sitting there. And you understand why the hell am I not sitting down right now? And I'm waiting. That's the part I don't get.

SPEAKER_00

I hate movies though.

SPEAKER_01

Movies Well, they're not bad no more.

SPEAKER_00

Oh Connie and I, when we went, we went and saw The Devils Were Prada 2, and it actually was kind of loud.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, loud, yes. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And I was like, oh my god, this is kind of loud.

SPEAKER_01

Usually it's like you can't hear because we I can't used to never bother me, but now the loudness does.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I'm I need to talk to my hearing doctor because it's like, why is it when you get older loud noises bother you and you can't hear?

SPEAKER_01

But as far as I don't get it. As far as people, there's hardly anybody in the theaters anymore.

SPEAKER_00

There was a lot of people there and a lot of talking, a lot of kids. Really? Wow. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Every time I go, there's no one even in there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And Disneyland, fairs, things like that.

SPEAKER_01

That's just I don't mind. I don't mind like the fair when I go.

SPEAKER_00

Too many people.

SPEAKER_01

I got my scooter, so it's not that bad.

SPEAKER_00

No, Randy. You drug you get in a scooter at Disneyland, it's it's it's hell.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I've never been to a scooter.

SPEAKER_00

You're like this the whole time because you're trying not to hit people. They keep walking in front of you and stop, or they walk across you and you're like, This is what you're doing the whole time. And it's like, that's not fun when you got a bad back. I actually stopped. And the person in front of me stopped, and I wanted to back up. And I actually went forward and I hit them. And they were very mad. And I was like, I'm sorry. Why did you stop in front of me? It's like, do you not see me down here? I need to wear like have a flag and wear bright yellow so people could see me. How could you miss me? But it's like, come on. I I don't get it. It was a horrible thing at Disneyland. And it was like and I'm being, you know, some people just zoom and they don't give a shit if they hit you or not. I just tend to be inconsiderate.

SPEAKER_01

It's a problem.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, it's like unless Disneyland has a special opening for seniors from midnight to six, I will be there. So comment below what you're not comfortable doing anymore. What becomes more of an issue? Didn't you talk about you don't like going on places anymore to travel?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't like I don't like long trips anymore because of traffic and um yeah, like my daughter lives in Idaho, and I've yet, she's been there five years, I've yet been there to visit her because I gotta carry all my tanks with me or something, and and driving's just not good for me by myself. My scooter I gotta take. Uh I mean it's a lot of stuff. It's just a pain in the ass.

SPEAKER_00

So you go ahead. You go ahead, please comment below on what places you avoid now as you've gotten older. As you've become retired. Yes, please join us. Yes. And subscribe while you're please, while you're commenting, please subscribe.

SPEAKER_01

I never know why we never go on Instagram.

SPEAKER_00

We are on Instagram.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay. I didn't know that. We are in okay.

SPEAKER_00

Randy knows nothing.

SPEAKER_01

I know nothing. I just sit here and look pretty.

SPEAKER_00

That's it. He's he's the star. Randy's the actor.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'm the director. I tell him what to do.

SPEAKER_01

She does.

SPEAKER_00

I do.

SPEAKER_01

I'm tired too from it.

SPEAKER_00

We have to get a good shot. I'm sorry, Randy. Let's just talk about it.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know how actors do it, how many shots they take, and I gotta do it all. Oh man, God, that's hard work. I'm finding that out. We just do a little bit of stuff, but man.

SPEAKER_00

You should try editing it.

SPEAKER_01

Oh. My sister, look, I just do this with her. I don't do anything other than that, other than dance a little bit, but she does all the stuff behind the scenes. Editing and vocals and all that stuff. She does all that. I do not. She works her ass off every freaking day doing it. Because I'm an angel. And she knows it. I don't know nothing about it. So if I did, I'd help out.

SPEAKER_00

He would, but it would take a lot of lot of lot a lot of years.

SPEAKER_01

It's one lot of too many.

SPEAKER_00

A lot of years.

unknown

A lot of years.
